FAQ
How much does it cost?
The cost of a commission depends on several factors. Most importantly, the size of the ensemble, length of the piece, and time allotted for creation.
No matter the occasion, concert, or ensemble, I would love to work with you! I offer very affordable rates for any situation.
How do I pay for it?
If you are able to cover the cost of a new work out of pocket or from ensemble funds, wonderful! However, for many ensembles that may not be the case. Here are a few other options to consider…
How long does it take?
It varies, this process can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months!
It is best to contact me as far in advance as possible before the piece is to be completed. This provides ample time for thorough planning, research, obtaining permissions for copyrighted texts/music, writing, editing, and creating scores. With that said, I'm open to expediting the process depending on the circumstances and the scale of the project.
Can you attend the premiere?
Absolutely!
I always love traveling to hear new music be brought to life!
If you would like me to conduct the piece with your ensemble, I am able to offer insight into the creative process to help establish a strong interpretation of the music.
As the composer, I'm also open to answering questions about the piece. If your ensemble is part of an educational institution and wants a creative learning experience alongside the commission, I can help plan a workshop or Q&A around the performance.
For attending the premiere or a residency, I ask for travel, lodging, and a small stipend. Let me know, and I'll include these details in the commission contract.
Can I dedicate the piece to an individual or occasion?
Yes! As the commissioning party, you will be honored with a dedication on the first page of the score, and acknowledged in all programs and program notes. During the commissioning process, we will collaborate to determine the specifics of the dedication.
How does the copyright stuff work?
As the composer, I hold the ownership of all of my titles. As the commissioning party, you have the option to request exclusive performing rights for the work for a specified period, during which it will not be performed by another ensemble. After that, I decide how it is distributed, published, and sold.
If the work is an arrangement of a copyrighted song or text, you will almost always have to pay a little extra to cover the copyright costs. These fees vary depending on the source material and it's copyright holder. Feel free to Contact Me and we can discuss this further!
